Research Assistant - UMass Language, Intersensory Perception, and Speech (LIPS) Lab
The LIPS Lab in the Psych and Brain Sciences Department studies how listeners perceive speech from both listening and seeing a talker. In particular, we are interested in how listeners adjust to talker's unique ways of speaking (e.g., to a non-native accent), how listeners recognize spoken words, and what perceptual and cognitive factor contribute to speech recognition, especially as listeners get older and experience hearing loss.
We use eye-tracking and other behavioral methods to address these questions, as well as EEG.
As an RA, you will primarily test participants in various paradigms and develop, record, and edit speech materials for experiments. You are also asked to attend and participate in our weekly lab meeting in those semesters where your schedule allows (Mondays 9:30-10:30).
After a year as an RA, there will be opportunities for you to take more advanced tasks, such as leading the training for new RAs, being the team leader for a project, and/or conduct your own research in form of an independent study or thesis.
9 hrs/week for 3 credits.
Preference will be given to students who can commit to a longer time period.
