uTA for Ecology (Bio 287) TuTh 1:00-2:15 PM

You will work primarily with Prof. Healey to support student learning (e.g., meeting with students in small groups or one-on-one) and help with exam proctoring and other tasks around exams.

In your application, please address the following (you do not need to write a long paragraph for each question; a few sentences are enough for questions 2-4).

1. Are you available Tuesdays & Thursdays from 1:00-2:15 PM? (If no, you cannot be a Bio 287 uTA. If 'maybe,' please explain.)

2. Have you taken Bio 287 at UMass? If yes, who was your instructor and which grade did you receive? If no, please describe your ecology background, including any courses you have taken.

3. What do you like about ecology?

4. Briefly describe prior teaching experience you may have (uTA for another course, tutoring in the LRC, serving as an SI). Teaching experience is NOT required!

5. Why would you like to serve as a uTA?

Why participate in this opportunity?

This opportunity will give you a chance to:

  • work closely with a professor
  • deepen your understanding of ecology
  • better understand how professors assess student learning
  • work with your peers to help them learn! It's a great feeling when others understand a concept and you've helped them get there.

The ideal candidate has taken my Bio 287 course but I consider any applicant with a solid ecology background.

You enjoy interacting with peers, and guiding students to work through a problem.

Good communication skills and a willingness (and the time) to review ecology concepts discussed in class are a must.
