Affect and Social Cognition Lab: Medical Decision Making

Our research team seeks outstanding, curious, passionate, responsible, energetic, collaborative, and highly motivated students with exceptional integrity to assist us with numerous research projects examining the following topics and questions:

Medical Decision Making, Information Processing, and Emotions
Healthcare Provider Stigma and Patient Experiences, Care, and Outcomes
Interventions to Improve Clinical Reasoning and Quality of Care
  • How do emergency physicians and nurses process information during clinical reasoning, decision-making, and diagnosis?  What factors (e.g., individual healthcare provider factors, patient factors, healthcare system-related factors) influence this and how?  What interventions can be developed to improve clinical reasoning and diagnostic accuracy?

  • How do physicians’ and nurses' emotions influence their clinical decision-making and behavior? How are patients affected (especially vulnerable patient populations, e.g., patients with mental health and/or substance use disorders, uninsured patients, and many others impacted by healthcare disparities)?  What role do stigmatizing attitudes play?

  • What interventions are effective in reducing cognitive and affective errors in clinical reasoning and clinical practice?  We are currently developing and testing cognitive interventions.

This research opportunity will expose students to many phases of the research process and will provide an excellent opportunity for students to gain firsthand knowledge and experience with how research is conducted.  Students working on our team will be expected to attend weekly lab meetings to discuss our research projects and the literature relevant to them. Weekly readings will be assigned and discussed during lab meetings.

Students will help to design and/or refine research studies, pilot research studies, recruit and schedule research participants, collect data, code and enter data into the computer, and help to interpret findings and research literature.  Students may also be required to transcribe and code interviews with Emergency Department physicians, nurses, and patients.  We will teach students how to do each of these tasks and will provide guidance, so no prior research experience is required; however, you must be highly motivated, eager, and enthusiastic to learn, and be able to thrive in a highly collaborative setting where teamwork is essential.
