Documenting Yiddish culture & Jewish radicalism in Miami & New York
Student assistant(s) will support the creation of a directory of field recordings (1985-1993) of Jewish immigrant elders who created vital communities around Yiddish culture and Jewish radicalism in Miami Beach and New York. Administered by the Yiddish Book Center (Amherst) and directed by the documentarian, these recordings will be digitized and posted online for educational and research purposes.

Why participate in this opportunity?
The creation of metadata to accompany each video/audio recording will include review and description of each media item. In this process, a wider array of documentary media recorded in these settings will be surveyed and catalogued. The creation of this directory will offer an opportunity to learn about these distinct histories, the process of doing documentary fieldwork, media archival methods, and drafting online text for public engagement. We will create a tandem website to feature select images from the field recordings with accompanying descriptive text. There may also be opportunities to edit short clips from these recordings for online posting.
