Exploring the Chemistry of Plant Defense and Signaling

Our lab investigates the biosynthesis and regulation of specialized metabolites, with a particular focus on terpene biosynthetic pathways in plants, especially the model legume Medicago truncatula. By integrating analytical chemistry, molecular biology, and genome engineering approaches, we seek to understand how plants produce diverse chemical defenses and signaling molecules.

To support this research, we are seeking motivated undergraduate laboratory assistants who are excited to contribute to the identification and biochemical characterization of enzymes involved in specialized metabolite biosynthesis, as well as to the elucidation of biosynthetic pathways through in planta metabolite analysis.

We welcome motivated students who are curious about plant biology and chemistry, and genome engineering to apply.

In addition to project-specific research activities, undergraduate assistants will receive training in core laboratory techniques, including molecular cloning, protein expression, and analytical sample preparation, and data analysis. Students will also gain experience in essential laboratory operations such as plant growth and maintenance, media preparation, and stock solution preparation. 

Because our research program benefits from continuity and progressive skill development, a long-term commitment is expected. We welcome enthusiastic and curious students with an interest in plant biology, metabolism, and genome engineering who are eager to learn and contribute in a collaborative and supportive research environment.

No prior research experience is required. We welcome motivated students who are eager to learn and develop new skills 

Students who are most successful in this project typically have:

  • An interest in plant biology, biochemistry, chemistry, genetics, molecular biology, or related life science disciplines
  • Coursework in  biochemistry, chemistry, genetics, plant science or related fields (completed or in progress)
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to follow laboratory protocols carefully
  • Good organizational and time-management skills
  • A willingness to learn new laboratory techniques and troubleshoot experimental challenges
  • The ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative research team
  • Commitment to maintaining accurate records and adhering to laboratory safety practices
