Understanding how plant proteins work together during cell division

Cell division is essential for the growth and development of all life, including plants. During plant development, proteins must communicate with one another to ensure that cells divide at the correct time and in the correct orientation. In corn, many proteins required for asymmetric cell division have been identified, but how these proteins function to regulate this process remains poorly understood. This project will investigate whether the cell division pathway discovered in corn is conserved in the model plant Arabidopsis. Identifying conserved protein interactions will improve our understanding of the molecular mechanisms that control plant development and may reveal signaling pathways that are shared across diverse plant species.

No special skills required - we will train you. Attention to detail is essential, and basic knowledge of genetics could be helpful, but not required.

Techniques learned

In the Facette lab, you will learn a variety of molecular biology techniques, including:

  1. Molecular cloning to generate DNA constructs for protein interaction studies.
  2. Yeast transformation and culturing techniques.
  3. Yeast two-hybrid (Y2H) assays to test whether pairs of plant proteins physically interact.
  4. Analysis and interpretation of Y2H results to identify candidate protein interactions.

Students will also gain experience in time management, maintaining a lab notebook, and communicating scientific results. Additional plant biology and microscopy techniques may be available for students who continue research in the lab beyond this project.
